supermen. Chapter One, Part Four

Adolf

October 1st, 1914, Munich, Germany

“Oh, Adolf, do you have to go?” Luther struggled to free himself from his landlord’s wife. “Yes, Frau Popp, my regiment has been called.” He pushed loose black hair off his forehead. “Tut, tut,” said Mr. Popp, “it’s an honor to serve Germany, isn’t that right, lad?” “Yes,” he smiled curtly, “for the Fatherland.” Frau Popp released him, and Luther firmly gripped her husband’s hand. “If I go west, Herr Popp, write to my sister Paula, won’t you? If she would like she may have my things, but if not, you may keep them.”

Luther knelt down and hugged Peppi and Liesel. Frau Popp burst into tears as her children snuggled into the shoulder of his military coat. “We must have one last beer, my boy.” “Herr Popp, you know I do not-” “Nonsense, Adolf, I insist; Peppi, fetch a stein of Muenchener Loewenbraeu for Adolf.” Luther stopped him, and gave him a coin. “Adolf-” began Peppi’s father, but Luther cut him off. “I insist, Herr Popp; your family shouldn’t want to fill my belly.” “You are an admirable man, Adolf, and it’s a pleasure to drink with you.” “As always, Herr Popp, the pleasure is mine.”
